A Purpose-Built Mobile Welfare Van by Vanbitious

At Vanbitious, we specialise in designing and building mobile spaces that go far beyond basic utility. We’re proud of every project we deliver, especially when it brings practical solutions to real-world problems. One of our recent builds – a custom welfare van based on a fully electric Ford E-Transit – stands out as a prime example of our ability to turn complex needs into high-functioning, thoughtful design.

The goal for this project was simple: create a versatile, off-grid welfare unit that provides a safe, warm, and well-equipped space for outreach work on the streets of Aberdeen. The result was a clean, modern vehicle that’s ready to operate in all seasons and fully independent from external power sources.

Designed and Built by Vanbitious

We led this project from initial consultation through to final delivery. Our team handled the full design and fit-out, tailoring every feature to meet the requirements for flexible use, comfort, and durability. We approached the build the same way we do with every Vanbitious conversion – with a focus on quality, reliability, and attention to detail.

Key Features of the Mobile Welfare Vehicle

  • Fully Electric, Zero-Emission Platform

Built on a Ford E-Transit, this vehicle offers silent, clean operation – ideal for urban use.

  • Off-Grid Electrical System

We installed 900 watts of solar panels and a 560 amp-hour lithium battery bank. Power can be drawn from solar, the vehicle’s alternator, or shore hook-up, all managed via Victron Energy’s robust system. This makes the van fully self-sufficient and easy to monitor remotely.

  • Functional Interior Layout

The interior was built to be warm, clean, and flexible – featuring comfortable seating, durable materials, climate control, and essential facilities like a kitchenette and storage.

  • Built for the Environment

Advanced insulation and full climate control keep the space usable year-round in Aberdeen’s unpredictable weather.

  • Designed for Hard Use

All finishes and surfaces were chosen for ease of cleaning and long-term durability.

Overcoming Design Challenges

Designing a welfare van always comes with tight constraints. You’ve got limited space, power needs, and the need for flexibility all in one. But it’s exactly this kind of challenge we thrive on. Every decision – from the layout to the power system – was made to ensure long-term function and minimal maintenance.

Advanced Electrical System

Designed for complete off-grid capability, it features 900 watts of solar power, a 560 amp-hour lithium battery bank, and three charging options: solar, the vehicle’s main battery, and shore hook-up. With a full roof of solar and an efficient battery bank, this vehicle can run independently for extended periods. It’s capable of delivering light, warmth, and hot drinks – all without relying on a mains hook-up. That’s the kind of freedom our off-grid solutions are built for.

Client Feedback

While we prefer to let our work speak for itself, here’s what the client had to say:

“A year ago, Aberdeen Street Pastors felt it was time to replace their much-loved Safe Space truck. With the seed of an idea, we approached local firm, Vanbitious, to understand what could be achieved using a large van as a platform and to get an estimate of costs. From the first minute on the phone, Vanbitious was fully invested in the potential project and couldn’t have been more helpful. After successful funding applications, the purchase of a Ford E-Transit, a more detailed design phase, and a meticulous build-out, the new Safe Space has been deployed on the streets of Aberdeen. Vanbitious has been an incredible team the whole way through, so helpful and knowledgeable with the technicalities and aesthetics during the build and absolutely brilliant with their support as we rolled the Safe Space van into operation. Aberdeen Street Pastors are so thankful to Vanbitious for working with us on our new Safe Space van – a real answer to our prayers.”

– Pete Turner, Chair of Trustees, Aberdeen Street Pastor
